One of the major issues in the conservation of endangered species is identifying and locating populations of species whose population numbers are declining or are considered extirpated or extinct.

This is a local conservation issue in the state of Michigan and in Berrien County with its cougar sightings increasing since the cougar was considered extirpated or extinct from an area. The issue also exist regionally in other Eastern and Midwestern states.  Tools  like biotelemetry have been developed and enhanced to help increase the production of scientific data used for additional knowledge on species like the cougar, that have been placed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List.  The most important information that can be given is that by the residents of Berrien County.  It is the reporting of any cougar sightings, tracks and kill that will inevitably lead to significant research being done and the status of the cougar being changed according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife.
